[atlarge-announce] icannatlarge.com newsletter, #1

ICANNATLARGE.COM NEWSLETTER
Number 1, May 6, 2002
===========================

What is this?
-------------

You are receiving this newsletter as you registered yourself as a
member of icannatlarge.com and consented to receive announcements. We
will use these newsletters at irregular intervals to keep you informed
about what happens in our organization and in ICANN.

For the moment we cannot give you an easy way to opt in and out of the
announcement list, but we will set it up as soon as possible.

We have also set up a general discussion mailing list for those of you
who told us that they don't like web forums. We encourage all members
who want to actively discuss to subscribe it - see details below.

Summary
-------

1. New mailing lists established
2. Official results of the panel elections
3. Election of the Chair and Alt Chair
4. Formal deliberations from the panel (Votes #1-#6)
5. Roadmap for the future

1. New mailing lists established
--------------------------------

The newly elected panel for icannatlarge.com has set up a mailing list
for general discussion about the At Large issues, open not just to its
members but to anyone interested. That mailing list aims to be a
prompt replacement of the current ALSC Forum list, which will close in
a few weeks from now, and to host the same kind of fruitful discussion
that has been characterizing it in the last two years.

We encourage you to subscribe now to the new list by sending an empty
message to atlarge-discuss-subscribe@lists.fitug.de . Archives may be
found at http://www.fitug.de/atlarge-discuss/ .

At the same time, the panel has set up two other lists:
- an announcement list for internal communication to all icannatlarge
com members who opted in at registration;
- a panel list for internal discussion and voting among panel members.

Both lists are publicly archived on the web at:
http://www.fitug.de/atlarge-announce/
http://www.fitug.de/atlarge-panel/

The panel kindly thanks FITUG e.V. for setting up and hosting these
mailing lists.

2. Official results of the panel elections
------------------------------------------

First of all, we want to thank all those members who participated in
these elections and contributed in making them a success. In the last
days, on different ICANN lists, compliments have been expressed to the
smooth way in which the elections ran and to the quality and diversity
of the candidates and of the resulting panel. We forward these
compliments to you, but we also want to thank Bret Fausett and
Alexander Svensson, who overviewed the election, and Elisabeth
Porteneuve and the other people at AFNIC, who materially hosted the
vote.

Of 770 persons in the voters roll, 293 votes (38%) were validly
expressed.

These are the results, sorted by number of votes received by each

http://www.dnso.org/icannatlarge/2002.AL-b01-results.html

At the same page you can see all votes that were casted (anonymized);
by searching for your personal code that was sent with your e-mail
ballot (the one which starts with K and ends with Z, such as K116dZ)
you can check that your vote has been correctly computed.

The panel will act as determined by the final election charter, which
you may read at
http://www.icannatlarge.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=408#408

3. Election of the Chair and Alt Chair
--------------------------------------

As required by the charter, the new panel has elected a Chair, with
the role of coordinating the discussion and the votes of the panel,
and an Alt Chair to substitute him when necessary.

The elected members were Vittorio Bertola as Chair and Izumi Aizu as
Alt Chair. Details of the votes are provided below.

4. Formal deliberations from the panel (Votes #1-#6)

Annex A to this vote:

A) VOTING SYSTEM FOR THE PANEL

Votes are called by the Chair on the panel mailing list. Panel members
may vote Yes, No, or Abstaining by adding their initials to the
relevant line in the ballot. The vote ends when all panel members have
expressed a vote, or when three days have passed from the call - in
this case, the vote is not valid if less than five votes have been
cast. The majority among non- abstaining votes prevails; in case of
tie between Yes and No, the vote of the Chair is doubled.

5. Roadmap for the future
-------------------------

There are many issues that need to be considered for the future,
including:

- how to manage the web site, how to change and update it, where to
host it;

- how to use the web forums, which forums to have;

- which rules of order or best practices, if any, to adopt for our web
forums and mailing lists;

- how to start the work on the Bylaws for the organization, and
particularly, as first steps, name and mission of the organization;

- how to interact with Denise Michel and the At Large Organizing
Committee (ALOC) which ICANN is about to create, and whether there
should be official or unofficial icannatlarge.com representatives in
the ALOC;

- how to interact with ICANN's Evolution and Reform Committee, and how
to position ourselves on the ICANN map;

- how to organize next panel elections;

- how to conduct an outreach campaign;

and much more, including timing and priorities for all of this.

We need your participation in all of this. The panel will try to order
issues by priority and guide the discussion to be productive, but we
encourage you to express your views either on the web forums or on the
newly created atlarge-discuss list.

Thanks for being an icannatlarge.com member!
