I have expressed a similar concern during the public forum in Rio, not
about trademark owners, but about existing registrants who have
registered the "ASCII-ized" version of Western and Eastern European
words which include extra characters, such as "liberte.com" in place
of "liberté.com". Perhaps these registrants should have priority over
the internationalized version, or it will be a mess (but of course
there are issues about which strings should be considered
equivalents). The ALAC will possibly produce a statement on this issue
as well, and of course suggestions are welcome.
