Sieben neue Top Level Domains beschlossen

And the winners are: .biz, .info, .name, .pro, .museum, .aero, .coop.
Sieben neue Top Level Domains (TLD) hat die Internet-Verwaltung
Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) auf ihrer
Jahrestagung in Los Angeles bestimmt.

Sollten die Verhandlungen der akzeptieren Bewerber mit dem ICANN-Büro
zur Zufriedenheit beider Seiten ausfallen, können ab erstem Quartal
des nächsten Jahres User unter .biz (Melbourne IT/ NeuStar), .info
(Afilias), .name (Global Name Registry/IBM) und .pro
(Register.Com/Virtual Internet) Domain-Namen registrieren. Außerdem
wählte die für Namen, Nummern und Protokollstandards zuständige
Organisation .museum für Museen, .aero für Fluggesellschaften,
Flughäfen und Reiseveranstalter (Societe Internationale de Aerospace)
sowie die von der Cooperative League of the USA vorgeschlagene .coop-
Domain für genossenschaftliche Unternehmen und Organisationen aus.
Als einen "ersten gewaltigen Schritt zur Öffnung des Domain Name
System" bezeichnete die scheidende Vorsitzende des ICANN-Vorstandes,
Esther Dyson, die mit Spannung erwartete Entscheidung. Der zu ihrem
Nachfolger gewählte Vint Cerf war etwas vorsichtiger: "Wir müssen
noch abwarten, bis die Verträge mit den ausgesuchten Bewerbern
ausgehandelt sind."
