British recording stars Paul McCartney and Elton John took aim at
free Internet music traders like Napster and MP3.com on Monday,
claiming that the practice of online copying and trading hurts the
very artists people love to hear.
British Music Rights (BMR), a trade organization of songwriters and
music publishers, launched its "Respect the Value of Music" offensive
using Forrester Research numbers that place music industry losses
from free online music trading at a potential US$3 billion by 2005.
"This isn't just the high-profile, high-earning music creators," BMR
said in a statement, "but also those thousands of composers and
songwriters who are not in the public eye but who depend upon the
income from their work to continue making music."
