Until now, the internet has seriously disturbed the social compact
over copyright: by removing all the old practical barriers to
copying, it has risked rendering private property meaningless,
threatening creative output. But in the future it risks the opposite
result: technology could give copyright owners a stranglehold over
content, stifling the free flow of information so central to the
vitality of the internet and the vibrancy of democracy.
