Conference to target kids' access to Net porn
Keeping children away from adult content on the Web is tough now, but
experts already are warning about when the pornography industry and
technology will really hit hyper-speed, making the job even tougher.
The current discussion about how to prevent children from browsing or
downloading sexually explicit images or videos merely taps the
surface, says Herb Lin, a senior scientist at the National Research
Council -- part of the National Academy of Sciences -- and project
leader of a three-day conference that begins today in Redwood City:
``Tools and Strategies for Protecting Children From Pornography.''

Lin poses an interesting scenario: What if pornography techies decide
to create a national, no-fee Web site?
``Right now, the so-called adult online industry is in it for the
money,'' Lin said in a recent interview. ``But what happens when a
different community starts exchanging pornography on the Net and no
money changes hands at all, just like Napster?''
No one is doing that yet, Lin cautions, ``but the technology exists
and we should be thinking about things like that now.''
