The biggest decisions about the internet's future will be political
and social, not technological
FOR some readers, this survey may have suggested that the risks and
uncertainties of the new internet-related technologies are too big to
be worth incurring, and that the world should therefore choose to
forgo their benefits. But that no longer appears to be an option. The
technologies that have built the internet are racing ahead on many
fronts, and are already too pervasive to stop in their tracks.
However, that still leaves plenty of choices, many of which will
require a new consensus to be built outside existing categories of
social or political debate. The outcome will be determined by people,
not technology.
