Sasser had minor impact: survey

By Online Staff
May 25, 2004

A global survey undertaken by the largest private security firm in the US
has concluded that less than one percent of PCs worldwide were affected by
the Sasser worm which hit Windows users at the beginning of May.

TruSecure invited people to send in details about PCs and how many had
been infected by Sasser. Details about a total of 8.1 million computers
were received, most being from the US and Canada.

The survey found that of this number, only one per cent reported
infections - 55,000. Less than a third (29 per cent) of those infected
suffered a monetary setback.

Among the infected ones, nearly three-quarters (73 percent) reported an
increase in help desk activity as the major impact of the worm.

The global cost of the worm at the moment has been put at $US979 million
and the cost in North America at $US522 million. The Blaster worm did
damage estimated at $US1.3 billion in North America alone. SoBig was
estimated to have cost the region $US1.6 billion.

The survey found that 26 per cent of the desktops infected would have been
protected if a personal firewall had been operational.
