I saw an interesting article in the Economist,

which said (comparing the British scene with France and Germany):

     How much more civilised, then, was the meeting on August 2nd
between British Internet providers and members of Scotland Yard's
Clubs and Vice Unit.  Like the Bavarian cops, the police were worried
about pornography carried on Internet newsgroups. A sizeable
proportion of the perhaps 20,000 newsgroups on the Internet deal with
sexual topics, ranging from support for victims of abuse to particular
sexual fetishes.
     The guardians of the law explained that the alternatives were
police action against the providers or self-regulation. Faced with
this choice, the Internet Service Providers Association (ISPA), which
represents most of Britain's providers, has agreed to take the latter
course, and block 1,000 newsgroups which Scotland Yard has deemed to
be carrying illegal pornography.  }

Be interesting to find out which these 1000 newsgroups are.
