Abstract/Summary:
LONDON -- Bertelsmann A.G., the largest publisher of English language
books, and the Xerox Corporation, the biggest copier maker, said Thursday
that they would work together to print books on demand in response to Internet
requests.

Bertelsmann will invest as much as $16.5 million over three years in the
worldwide
nonexclusive agreement. It will combine its book and Internet interests, which
includes the publishing company Random House and a stake in Barnesandnoble.com
Inc., with printing technology supplied by Xerox.

Instead of using a printing press, where higher volumes lower production costs,
electronic technology allows books to be printed using computers and digital
printers
at a constant cost per copy. That means publishers can produce one book at the
same unit cost as several hundred, allowing them to cater to individual
requests for
books, particularly rare ones.
