Dear Hans Klein, Dear All,

the elected ICANN’s Directors will seat together at the same desk at
your meeting. This will be a a very important achievement for your
organization, and a great opportunity for all.

As European, after giving a particular attention, for obvious reasons,
to what is happening in North America, I’d like to understate my
positions to hear how other Internet communities are dealing with
user’s needs representation, transparency, Internet’s development.
Yes, I could find a lot of infos on the web. But after all, fresh
elected directors are holding the representation of At Large
Membership.

I don’t expect an immediate convergence, and sure they would respect
the strive for self-organization (btw. I support your proposal for an
Interim Commitee). But they have ideas, and soon some power; they can
make some things happens.

The problem of funding seems the biggest. Without Markle Foundation we
are not here. We are all grateful to them, but also seriously
concerned about this occasional model of funding. Also with only 5
directors elected, At Large Membership is a stable reality inside
ICANN, and new resources are needed. I suspect that there is not a
unique solution: many forms of direct funding or indirect aid should
be allowed; to avoid religious wars, funds from domain name holders,
business, governments should be all submitted to strict transparency
rules. Transparence has its costs, too. It need some time to present,
to explain, to control. But it could give strong motivations for
people to debate and participate.

Also ICANN, really, has achieved some important goals, more than
expected - and more tied to original design. I don’t know if the
remaining 4 founder directors will leave now, or soon, or never. I am
confident that, also for ICANN, the era of openness is here, thanks to
many individuals and organisations.
