Five of the seven current Interim Panelists are standing for re-election:
Vittorio Bertola
Satyajit Gupta
Richard Henderson
Sotiris Sotiropoulos
James Love
These Panelists had a job to do:
1. guiding an outreach campaign
2. drafting, within 2 months, Bylaws proposals to be voted on by the
membership
3. establishing a secure voting system
4. appointing a webmaster
5. promoting Forum discussion
6. arranging for the election of their successor Panel
Ask yourselves if these tasks have been successfully accomplished by those
standing for re-election. Do they deserve your vote for another term?
The issue of diversity has been raised in this election process. As a matter
of policy as put forth in the White Paper, "Mechanisms should be established
to ensure international participation in decision making." Did these
panelists act to "ensure" such diversity?
It is certainly possible that only North Americans will be elected to the new
eleven-member panel simply because no safeguards were established to protect
the regional approach to representation. Such a result would immediately
serve to destroy the credibility of this organization. As much as I am
partial to the views of many North Americans standing for election, an
effective capture of the leadership positions by a single block will not
serve the long-term best interests of the global At-Large community.
This election process has been rushed through by Panelists that failed to
accomplish anything else during their tenure, and even this effort is poorly
planned and poorly executed. Do these Panelists deserve a new 12-month term?
Perhaps... we are all human, and we all make mistakes... but give some
thought to the new entrants in this election -- they certainly can't muck it
up any worse.
