RE: [atlarge-discuss] Why was the GA list closed off?

Richard,

The Closing of the GA mailing list was one of several maneuvers by
Icann's "reforms". The PSO and it's accompanying Mail list is also being
closed out. (See article below from JUNE 28, 2002 / Mid-Page).

I could basically accept a "Talk to the Hand" approach from Icann and
the corporate industrialist, *BUT* I cannot and will not accept the
"Talk to the Hand" approach from the IcannatLarge panel. I understand
that there is a variety of individual opinions, but for the pro
corporate industrialist panel members to shut-out the diversity of
opinions being made here, is adverse to the nature of this forum. (And
runs contrary to the First Amendment)

I had to ask myself, Why have these individuals of pro-industrial
concerns not joined Icann's participatory groups: the Technical Advisory
Committee (TAC), the Country-code Names Supporting Organization (CNSO),
The name of the Domain Name Supporting Organization the Generic Name
Supporting Organization (GNSO)???

My guess is that they don't know yet that they've been had, by Icann,
the US(Admin & DOC), and Multinationals.

"ICANN is an independent private organization. We can restructure as we
want and we don't need approval from the Commerce Department," Lynn
said.

Structurally, the proposed reforms would include dissolving the Protocol
Supporting Organization (PSO) and replacing it with a Technical Advisory
Committee (TAC), while also establishing a Country-code Names Supporting
Organization (CNSO). The name of the Domain Name Supporting Organization
would be changed to the Generic Name Supporting Organization (GNSO).

The revised ICANN structure would include three supporting organizations
-- the GNSO, the CNSO and the Addressing Supporting Organization (ASO)
-- with four standing advisory committees of the board: the GAC, the
TAC, the DNS Root Server System Advisory Committee (RSSAC) and the
Security Advisory Committee (SAC).

To boost its funding, ICANN-accredited registrars and registries would
be required to pay ICANN a per-name fee, estimated at 25 cents per
domain name.

Once again, it seems to the individual user like an attempt to limit
dialogue, participation, and openness to criticism.
