[atlarge-discuss] Re: Poll to give structure and Rules to icannatlarge

Dear Joop,

Fortunately, this time my ISP was co-operative and I did manage
to vote in the poll, except

- for some reason my vote on the Quorum question didn't go in properly.
Instead of the "submit" process working and bringing up the
confirmation, I got a blanking of the browser window (iCab, latest
version 2.9 for PPC Mac). Trying again, I got "you have already
voted" but the comment I had included with my vote did not appear
in the Results compilation.

- one of the other questions also produced a "you have voted
already message" when I submitted my vote for the first time;
however, the vote appeared to have gone in despite my not
getting a confirmation.

The interface looks very nice and I'm sure many people like your
setup but I'm afraid I don't really think it's the best way for
ICANNATLARGE.ORG to get feedback from its members.

For one thing, it took me over an hour (on 33k dialup but with
the fastest of my Macs and a very efficient browser) to cast my
votes and quickly type a couple of brief comments -- and that even
though I didn't need a lot of time to think about the questions.
It took another hour to view the results page for each question.
This is a lot more time than would be needed to fill in a
single ballot containing the same number of questions on the
same system. (It would be even faster and simpler for people
to vote in an e-mail ballot.)

For another, I think there is a deeper problem than access
speed involved. (I'm quoting your original message below so that
anyone who didn't want to get mail from you can see it for
themselves.)

At the risk of boring and annoying some subscribers, you are
continuing to perpetuate an ambiguity that really must be
resolved as quickly as possible. That is, exactly what
"organization" or "organizations" will be holding elections.

Our status at the moment is:
 1) This group, which voted to be called ICANNATLARGE.ORG,
has a Web site which is (as yet) what Vittorio chose to
make it, acting unilaterally as Chair of the Panel and
the WG-Web whose activities ceased in December due to
apparent lack of interest on his part.
 2) The group (as opposed to the Web site which carries its
name) wants to become an organization which will serve
the interests (in some manner) of individual Internet
users. It has previously agreed to use the Polling Booth
    for information-gathering purposes.
 3) You (Joop) personally own the ICANNATLARGE.*COM* Web site
and the Polling Booth, and can operate them any way you
like without reference to decisions by the group or its
(present rump and future full) Interim Panels.

Your message, sent to registrants at your ".com" site who did not
"opt-in" for your mailings, refers to an entity called
"icannatlarge" and, though it mentions both the ".com" and
".org" sites, it does not spell out the relationship between
1, 2, and 3 above.

Please forgive me, everyone, if this is of no interest to you.
It is of deep concern to me. I believe it is of prime importance
to recognize the difference between a group which seeks to
become (soon!) a full-fledged democratic organization on one
hand, and either of the Web sites since neither of them is
actually operated by the group.

Some of the questions in the current poll are clearly directed
at members of ICANNATLARGE.ORG and relate to their functioning
as a group. Others seem to have arisen spontaneously from Joop's
own thoughts about how such a group should be managed rather
than what ICANNATLARGE.ORG members have discussed on this list.
So doubts may arise as to whether the questions are about *this*
group (rather than a different one with an overlapping membership)
and, if so, whether the results should be binding on us.

I won't comment in detail for I don't want to influence voting
as it is still proceeding but I do think people should be
thinking as they vote about whether and how the questions
relate to what they want this organization to become.

Anyway, I do want to thank you, Joop, for your efforts and those
of the members who assisted you to make the Polling Booth work.
It remains to be seen what use we, as a group, can make of the
results but that doesn't diminish your contribution - even if
I'd have liked more clarity and transparency for the sake of
the group.

Regards,

Judyth
