[atlarge-discuss] The new particpants - Re: [atlarge-discuss]
Honorable Sotiris,
Well, it seems 'at large' is in jeopardy of its very identity. It doesn't
even have a real name. How that came about was probably one of
participation or the complications of participation, a point that seems to
be on the table for discussion.
I agree with Curtis, the list was quite loud enough to not add in even more
to the din. Who knows to what order that may yet contribute. Perhaps it is
just a limit to using listservs as primary methods of discovery. There were
some other moves made: a couple web boards, some more lists, some polling
booths, some email polls. All probably helped more than they harmed but it
did begin to add some confusion, focus suffered. The addition of kookload
started to weigh even more on any participant's interest.
I'm not trying to be a part of anything more than what I do and am
interested in doing. Sometimes that will require some activism because of
periodic rainbow straightening teams that need to be oriented to the history
and spirit of the Internet.
I see:
http://cyber.law.harvard.edu/icann/la/archive/chatlog-110299.txt
as an early-ish date recording my ICANN related participation. I wanted
that to really be the open system it seemed it was going to become. It
began to faulter then GA and @Large were held up to stop the hemmoraging.
Doesn't seem to have worked. So now we are doing it ourselves, but maybe
not on the shirt tails of ICANN. @Large needs its own identity. A new
fresh perspective.
So the vote idea of a new panel was actually something worth trying. It
keeps the momentum going while creating time to generate some perspective.
Did you really think anything else was happening?
I'm not sure trying to force the new structure to hold up to the demands of
personal interest is anywhere near the issue of the moment. This second
pass at formalization will still be a proxy vehicle. Word of participation
as membership. Bark and you're in. When filtering and access begin to
sharpen the focus and support to a degree that garners long lasting respect
then it will be far more important to know what cracks anyone may have
climbed from. Until then, don't chicken your hatch before you even have
eggs.
