And for good reason. At Large membership cannot be made contingent upon
disclosure of personally identifiable contact information in the public
domain because it would be unlawful in at least 18 nations under the EU
Privacy Directives. The examples you cite are all corporate representatives
providing work related contact details, rather than home phone number and
personal email. I put this demand is the same category as insisting
individual Registrants provide their personal details for the public Whois.
Not a reasonable request.
Having said that, I certainly think one can and should hold the Panel and
Committee members to a higher standard, and I strongly support the
initiative to implement the Registrar Constituency's minimum requirements of
transparency for those standing for election - being volunteers answerable
to their electorate, who must remain contactable by the general assembly.
That does not mean to say that the Membership Committee cannot insist that
some personal identifiable information is a pre-condition to membership, of
course we understand that is necessary, but it does mean to say that
personally identifiable contact details, (with the possible exception of an
email address), must be kept in confidence by the committee and cannot be
published on the website for all to see.

Joanna
