[atlarge-discuss] Membership fees

Richard,

By your own admission we are participating in a campaign for the advancement
of this cause. Even in your country, the ordinary citizen understands that
campaigns cost money and that fees are associated with membership in a
campaigning organization. Campaigning organizations accept donations, but voting and
membership rights only accrue with the payment of a membership fee.

Examples:

1. The subscription for membership of the Conservative Party is £15, or £3
if you are 22 yrs or younger.

2. to join the Labour Party £1 - £10 per month sliding scale based on income

3. Any donation of £5 or more entitles you to membership of the Liberal
Democrats.

4. Join the Green Party of England and Wales -- Waged £28.00, Low/unwaged
£9.50, Student £4.00, Life £364.00

I am sure that your country has enough participants in campaign efforts. The
membership fees cited here are obviously not a significant barrier to
participation, and they allow the campaigning organization to efficiently get its
work done.

Please don't place your egalitarian idealism ahead of the pragmatism needed
to get the work done. The above model works well in your country as it does in
mine and many others -- stick with a proven model and the likelihood of
success is exponentially improved.
