Email address extraction key source of spam

A recent survey showed that the major culprits behind the proliferation
of spam emails are "email address extractors," said the Ministry of
Information and Communication yesterday.

According to the ministry, a local spam email blocking solution company
polled spam email senders regarding how they collect email addresses and
85 percent answered they use email address extractors.

Other methods include buying email databases from smugglers (7 percent),
sharing the information of members registered in certain Web portals (3
percent) and hacking (3 percent).

An email address extractor is a software program that gathers email
addresses from any URLs the users input as well as from their links.

The information ministry prohibits the sending of email to addresses
compiled through email address extractors from Web sites that state the
denial of email address collection. The violation of the law imposes a
maximum fine of 10 million won.
