In the UK, there is a story about David Beckham's SMS messages being
disclosed to a news paper reporter, which published details about his
private life.  The GSM Association spokesperson stated "We do not believe
that operators retain the content of messages," he said "they simply
retain routing and billing information."

Half way around the world, in Australia over 2500 SMS messages from
Telstra and Optus over a six week period in 2001 were introduced in a
Murder case.  The messages were not intercepted, but obtained from
Telstra and Optus archives.  Telstra said the messages were obtained
prior to the introduction of Australia national privacy principles.

Telstra keeps all SMS messages including full content for 28 days,
while Optus keeps all SMS messages for three days.  Vodafone Australia
says it doesn't keep the SMS content, but does record the time, length
and destination of messages for billing.
