                 Europe Votes For ISP Spying
                 Infrastructure

                 European ISPs expressed outrage this
week after the European Parliament voted to
require ISPs and telephone companies to
                 provide law-enforcement agencies with
full-time real-time access to Internet traffic.

The European Internet Service Providers' Association
rejected the resolution outright saying it was
                 seriously flawed and lacked scrutiny.

"One Parliament committee voted against the proposal,
another was not allowed to offer an opinion, and then
the vote took place on a Friday when three-quarters
of the MEPs [members of the European Parliament] were
absent. This is clearly inadequate," a spokesman
                 said.

He said the document would cause serious
constitutional concerns and was flawed in regard to
                 data-protection laws.
