There will be 5 new directors elected by the At-Large-Members.
Now that does not enable one of them or all together to change the world.
And I doubt, that any candidate thinks that way.

But it is a first step and that is - as the saying goes - the beginning of
every journey.

You have political experience, right?

Then you surly know, that there are different levels of work.
Every director will be able to speak to and discuss with other
board members and ICANN officials.
At public meetings he/she can address issues and raise questions
important to users.
Most entities like ICANN prefer unanimous decisions.
It would not look good if - worst case - the 5 directors representing the
users have to disagree too often.

In my opinion the 5 directors will have to look, how confrontational
the atmosphere really is. The existing board members will have to live
with the newbies and vice versa.
Maybe it is not as negative as you seem to believe.

I personally hope, that the board will find a way of constructive
cooperation. Even if this sometimes means going through rough consensus.
