The Hamburg-based net research and consulting company
MediaTransfer AG has done a study on the acquaintance with
ICANN, asking a sample of 1000 German Internet users
(the composition of the sample and the panel corresponding
to the overall composition of German Internet users
according to the well known GfK Online-Monitor 6 study).
First question (my translation):
"In September the primaries for the formation of ICANN
(Internet Corporation for Assigned Names und Numbers)
have been concluded. Does this term ring a bell, have
you already occupied yourself with this topic?"
Results: yes: 27.8% / no: 62.8%
Then the users got a short introduction (again my
translation):
"ICANN is the newly formed and non-governmental organization
that is already described as 'Internet government' and
which in the future will decide about the technical
organization of the Internet and the allocation of Internet
addresses."
The rest is from the press release; unfortunately, there
is no differentiation between those who have heard of ICANN
before and those who haven't:
57.3% welcomed the concept of an international democratic
institution for the Internet's organization. 62.1% were
not sure whether ICANN can keep independent of state and
commercial interests and represent user interests.
67% wanted ICANN to stand up for data protection and
Internet security, 34% hoped that ICANN would set
technological standards.
20.5% of the German Internet users think that the
allocation of Internet addresses and the creation of
standards is an important task.
As usual, the research should be taken with a grain
of salt. The German wording of the questions is
available at ICANN Channel.

/// Alexander
