Leader of `Virii' Hacker Group Sentenced to Year in Prison (1/15)
ROSS KERBER c.1999 The Boston Globe
BOSTON -- A Rhode Island man was sentenced Thursday to a year and a day in prison after admitting that he led a nationwide computer-hacking group known as the ``Virii.''
But at a sentencing hearing Thursday in US District Court, Judge Patti Saris questioned whether the Internet service disruptions and other damages caused by 21-year-old Sean Trifero added up to as much as $67,500, as prosecutors claimed.
Saris also rejected a request by prosecutors that Trifero continue to be banned from the Internet, a setback to the government's contentions that the group he led threatened national security interests.
