News Burst: Australians step closer to routine surveillance Tue, 30 Nov 1999 11:35:56 GMT Will Knight

The Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO) now has the power to routinely access and alter the data on private computer systems after to a bill passed by the Australian parliament Friday.

The ASIO Amendment Bill 1999 has come under fierce criticism from civil liberties organisations and democratic politicians. The success of the new Bill is likely to impact upon decisions made by other governments regarding computer surveillance.

British experts have also expressed fears that government hacking is likely to increase in the UK.
