Home Office drafts code of practice for Snooping PUBLISHED: 6:21pm on Monday 10th July 2000

The UK Home Office has published a draft code of practice designed to allay fears about the Regulation of Investigatory Powers (RIP) Bill, currently in the House of Lords.

The code of practice - which is split into four parts - will govern the day-to-day operation of the Bill, including interception of electronic communications, covert surveillance and the investigation of encrypted data.

According to the Home Office the draft code is published before the Bill becomes law to give a feel of "government thinking in this area". The Home Office is inviting feedback on the code before final a version is published later this year.

To see the code go to http://www.homeoffice.gov.uk/oicd/ripbill.htm

Feedback should be sent in writing to RIP Bill Team, Home Office, 50 Queen Anne's Gate, London, SW1H 9AT. (Yes we're serious - apparently the Home Office find it easier to "keep track" of feedback if it is sent in on pieces of paper.)
