The male college student is generally considered to be the archetypical Web music pirate.

Not so fast.

A survey conducted by the Pew Internet and American Life Project, a nonprofit research center, contradicts that view. In fact, it found that the majority of those illegally downloading music are not college students at all.

The phone survey of 2,503 American adults taken in April indicated that of the 13 million American "freeloaders," only 37 percent are college students. In fact, fewer than half (48 percent) are between the ages of 18-29. Forty-two percent are between 30-49, while the remaining 10 percent are over 50.

Men are more likely to download illegal music files than women: Sixty-four percent of the respondents who admitted pirating music are male.
