The Death of Cyberspace

Stefan Krempl 14.03.2000

E-nterview with Lawrence Lessig

Cyberlaw expert Lawrence Lessig talks about the virtual recreation of barriers to entry, the tragic of the virtual commons, and the end of innovation in the Internet.

Lawrence Lessig: Because of changes technologists are making, and changes lawyers are making. Technologists are describing ways to architect the network to change a fundamental value of the network-- what network architects call the principle of "end to end." End to end codes the internet so the network can't discriminate. New architectures are being adopted to permit this discrimination. That is a danger to innovation.

Lawyers are bringing to the net many of the traditional barriers to entry -- patents and an over-expansive set of copyrights. These too will increase the costs on innovation, and make it harder for people to create.
