Lexis battles an Internet upstart over distributing case law online By Jess Bravin THE WALL STREET JOURNAL

May 15 — An MP3-like dispute is roiling the legal publishing world, raising the thorny question: Is it unlawful to disseminate U.S. case law and statutes on the Web?

THE ANSWER MAY COME as early as Monday, when a New York federal judge is expected to rule in a closely watched dispute pitting Lexis, one of the giants of legal publishing, against an Internet upstart called Jurisline.com LLC. Lee Eichen and Kendrick Chow, two nonpracticing lawyers, created the online service last year by copying CD-ROMs that Lexis markets and now offer most of its content for free online.
