Microsoft plans new Windows interface

Bill Gates is planning sweeping changes for Microsoft's Windows operating system in his new role as the company's chief software architect.

Speaking on Sunday at the World Economic Forum in Davos, he repeatedly referred to the changes, as a "new interface", and compared them to the introduction of the original version of Windows over a decade ago.

The implications for other software businesses are significant. Each time there is a big change in the Windows interface, there is a new opportunity for programs to win and lose market share, depending on how they adjust to the challenge.

As part of this, he plans to make extensive use of XML, eXtensible Markup Language, to classify material, allowing it to be easily searched for content without requiring the user to do the search.
