Hi Declan,

The European Union now has a draft directive on data protection which sets out a much more sensible position on cookies than some - including me - had thought they might do.

"Where such devices, for instance so-called cookies, are intended for a legitimate purpose, such as to facilitate the provision of information society services, their use should be allowed on condition that clear and precise prior information about the purposes of cookies or similar devices is provided by the operator of a website sending such devices or allowing third parties to send them via his website."

Go to http://www.publicinfo.net/pic.php?allvars=060216028482000000202001-12- 051 and, in the full-text pane, click on 'text of common position'. The above quote is from numbered section 25. (It's a PDF)

Regards, John Clements
