[Personal note: To those members of this list who have derided my oft-expressed fears of prosecution for anticensorware work (you know who you are), there ARE severe and real legal risks. Here's another case of a programmer facing charges.]

Planet eBook eBook Day at Seybold Seminars - San Francisco 2001, September 27, 2001 FBI Reportedly Detains ElcomSoft Employee in U.S. Author of Advanced EBook Processor Software not on flight home

16 July 2001

Dmitry Sklyarov, an employee of ElcomSoft, Ltd. of Moscow, Russia and author of the "Advanced eBook Processor" software program that Adobe Systems has alleged is in violation of Sec. 1210 of U. S. Copyright Law, was reportedly detained today as he was attempting to return home after making a presentation at the DefCon 9 Conference in Las Vegas over the weekend.

Vladimir Katalov, Managing Director of Elcom Ltd., told Planet PDF and Planet eBook today that efforts to get any information about Sklyarov's situation have been unsuccessful for most of the day, other than a confirmation from the Russian Consulate that Sklyarov was not on board the scheduled flight to Moscow.

Editor's Note: (17 July 2001 0100 PDST) Vladimir Katalov has informed Planet eBook that Dmitry Sklyarov, author of the Advanced eBook Processor, was in fact arrested, and that he is being held in a Las Vegas prison waiting for subsequent judgement in California. The reason for the arrest has been cited as being the Advanced eBook Processor and his speech at DefCon 9. According to Vladimir, Dmitry's wife in Moscow received this information via an interpreter and has not yet been able to talk to her husband.

Further details to follow.
