[atlarge-discuss] WG Network Systems
Dear Chair,
I suggest that we add to the list of WGs, a WG Network Systems.
This group would gather all the Members participating or wishing to
participate into the sustainable development of the Internet
infrastructure. The concerns would range from the Root Server Systems
(which are operated by @large people on a voluntary baisis), the IETF, the
W3C (where matters such as P3P may affect our daily life), to iDNs which
are a major concern for our Asian, Arabic, en European Members. We have to
realize that the mail and the web we use and discuss today are just among
the many interconnected technologies we use every day. Debate over
telephone, wi-fi, tv, payment systems, security etc.. and the imposed
constraints will be far more important than the domain names and the
alt(sic)roots. Even if the very nature of the DNS remains the key element.
Then there is the huge area of the Linux and open source and of the
development made for the network and the new services we can develop and
help de facto standarize as being the users. The outreach impact woud be
probably important. I think for the example to a community working tool, we
could make developped for us as "a panel + local chapters + specialized
WG". This could for example include ziped daily abstracts for low speed
access members who could better share with us. This could also be the way
for a voting system project. We have the size and the distribution for our
solution to be used, with feed backs from the community.
We cannot be out that area, even if it has not the focus. It is also a good
Outreach as techies tend to stay allied and discuss over what they do. We
could for example organise a technical support on projects like national
sites (if Sotiris uses PHPpostNuke or whatever), mutual assistance to use
the net (a good outreach theme) and to change servers, to select solutions,
etc.
As an example, I think that there are technical alternatives to the WhoIs
system, that we could speficy them and test them and then propose an RFC.
The IETF started as the tecnical support of the small arpanet. Today we are
confronted to an internet which is 190 arapanets (one per contry, plus one
global one). We need to tecnically adress se specific problems, or to keep
ourself informed and alert the community on the threads and on the
opportunities we may observe. We also represent a good basis for new user
solution testing.
I would then propose all the Members with a technical back-ground and
interest, to join. We could specialize by topics, join the IETF/W3C
corresponding lists and start reporting on what is discussed. In some areas
we can certainly help with propositions.
