Re: [atlarge-discuss] Last Man Standing

Interesting post.

It makes you wonder whether it wouldn't be worth just "setting up" with this
group, creating a commodity (a users organisation), then coming back six
months later and starting to democratise it.

I share the view that a small number of people are actively involved in
creating the foundations of the future at large.

In a way, by their own participation, the people you list are potentially
the panel / creators of the at large.

*Surely* between us, after or regardless of the coming election, there is
enough goodwill and common purpose for us to work together and create a
commodity which can *then* attract the users who will buy into the vision?

Some of the "Icann-plants" have faded away from our day-to-day discussions.
I know we sometimes disagree strongly (too strongly?) on specific points,
but I genuinely believe you have listed a group of people who know and
understand the real need for alternative voices and *participation* in the
DNS administration.

I regard our group to be at the beginning of a significant work. We have
been learning about what democracy means. We share democratic impulses. At
this juncture what is needed is the construction of a working organisation.
Whether that is achieved democratically or by a small group of people is
really neither here nor there, providing the outcome is a functioning
operation which thousands of people subsequently *want* to buy into.

I regard democratic process as essential to our identity. But I don't
personally think that we are at the stage where democratic operation is yet
imperative. What is imperative, is that in 6 months time we have a Mission
Statement, Aims, Bylaws, and the Processes to really participate in a range
of urgent issues.

Once we have the commodity, then it is essential to democratise it, in order
to validate it. Right now, we few, supported by others who lurk and
sympathise, need to insist on action, objectives, and timescales.

If the next panel does not achieve this, then others will achieve it instead
. The need for an active and functioning at large (growing without regard
for ICANN's sham) is without question.

The efforts of some people on your list are verging on the heroic. This is a
project which must succeed.
