RE: [atlarge-discuss] Internet for Users

>From all the questions I read and answered (and I do believe I answered
all of them, if not please tell me) this is one of the hardest to answer
and to comprehend because it asks me to put myself in a little drawer
with a label, something I tried to prevent ending up as for most of my
life.

What I do for a living is known and documented, I am a small (very
small) ISP who does some co-lo., webhosting and shell-hosting, my main
income however comes from LAN, WAN and WLAN install and maintenance,
server building and install and such.

So am I thus in the category "industrial relatives"? After all I also do
some domain registrations, as a reseller. Yet despite feeling a part of
the internet community at large, I do not really think I am part of "the
industry" so no, not that category.

Governements and me, we do not get along to well, they want to limit my
freedom of expression, given half the chance they would even control my
way of thinking, they go to war without my consent, and they certainly
want to much money from me all the time, so no, not that actegory
either.

Users, now I know I am one of them, since 1989 I am a user, and it did
one thing for me, it learned me a lot along the way, first I had to
master "archie" and "finger" and "telnet", then "the web" came along,
wow, I learned some html ( 1 & 2 )and even dabbled with vhtml. But time
and technique moved faster then I could master it all.

I guess everyone that turns on a computer and connects it to the "net"
is a user however so yeah I do fit in that category, but thank god, so
does everyone who does that.
Even people who fall in the other categories are also users, and as such
might have a totally different agenda then their job-description would
suggest.
Though it may be hard to comprehend, I do believe that people in the
(portrait as) less desirable categories are users to, perhaps even first
and foremost and as such might be enrichement to our membership. We can
not fathom their private thoughts, maybe they use an alias to
participate and help build what their collective bosses do not want to
see grown.

We can not judge on categories, only on actions, and then every user can
be a dangeer to the build-up of an organization.

Perhaps some "agencies" created persons that are on this list consisting
of 5 or 6 people working in shifts monitoring all maillists out there
and participating with the idea of disruption alone, who knows.
All I know is that I am speaking my mind and if I can do that for others
at the same time who share my ideas then that is great, if o do it for
me alone then still I will not be silenced, as I do not accept that any
minority should be silenced, whether I agree with the views or not.

As a host I sponsor several sites by giving them free hosting and
domains, help where needed and a "safe haeven" for their ideas.
(www.lawyeragainsthewar.org www.cupofwonder.com www.rainbow-co-op.org
www.hujjat.org www.madressa.net and www.almost-homeless.net being a
diversity of examples.

So am I a "good samaritan" ? Naw, I try to make money, and if that money
can come from chasing my ideal world, even better, I do not say no to a
customer who wants hosting and comes to me via any of those sites,
though I do no count on getting customers from it.

All I do is care about what is happening in the world and on the
internet in particular, add to that the fact that I think that I know
something about some things that are going on and my inability to shut
up, and you have my profile, but still I do not know in which category I
fall.

Maybe you can label me, if so good luck, if not, then at least you know
what makes me tick.

Regards

Abel
