[ICANN-EU] Who is the (European) At Large?

Dear all,

the veil has been lifted a bit.
Now, ICANN has not only published the statistics
of final verified applications by region, age and
sex, but also the answers to the additional questions
-- whether the applicant has a domain name
-- what his or her occupation/role is
-- how he/she heard about ICANN.

You can find the statistics at
http://members.icann.org/activestats.html
and some graphics at
http://www.icannchannel.org/stats2000.htm [en]
http://www.icannchannel.de/stats2000.htm [de]

Although one has to be careful because especially in
the Asia/Pacific region, many applicants didn't respond
(language difficulties?) -- here are some of the results:

AGE -- No surprises here. Most At Large members seem
to be between 20 and 29 (36% of respondents) or
between 30 and 39 (33% of respondents). It's almost
the same when you take a look at the European statistics.

SEX -- ICANN At Large still is predominantly male; the
overall ratio of respondents is 88:12, in Europe it's
even 91:9.

ROLE/OCCUPATION -- The No. 1 group of European At
Large members are... students!

 Student _____________________ 4201

 Government / Public Service _ 1496
 Non-Profit Organization _____ 837

 Not Employed ________________ 236
 No Response _________________ 3569

No other region has such a high amount of
students participating in ICANN. In the American regions,
Internet business and computer software are predominant.

HEARD ABOUT -- How did people hear about ICANN?
The majority of the *total* members has heard about
ICANN online (34% by banner ads, email, search engine
or website). Face-to-face contacts come second (21% at work,
friend/acquaintance), and finally offline media (12% newspaper/
magazine, print media).
In Europe however, the offline media have played a more
significant role: 25% have heard about ICANN there,
compared to 38% online and 21% face-to-face.

DOMAIN NAMES -- Almost half of the European At Large members
has a domain name, while the other half doesn't. Even in
the worldwide statistics, the number of domain owners is
almost a third (with another third not responding).

Best regards,
/// Alexander
