Hello, all,
It is a normal criterion for members of any organization that they subscribe to the purpose for which that organization exists; it is also quite normal that the bylaws include provisions for suspension or expulsion of a member who makes it clear he or she does not uphold that purpose.
What Danny proposes strikes me as not only a loyalty oath (which I would consider inappropriate in and of itself) but one which commits a member not to the organization or its mission but to a specific document ... which confines the member to an ICANN-oriented vision.
It is somewhat ironic that a person who is not a member of the organization (due to an unwillingness to commit to a to-be-announced mission) is proposing an oath which would compel at least one member (me) to resign outright since it would preclude democracy within the organization-to-be -- that is, the definition of the organization's goals and methods by its members as they see fit over time.
I am very much looking forward to seeing what Michael Geist proposes as a draft, and very much hoping that once we have a logically-structured text to discuss, we can work through it point-by-point so as to arrive at a final version on which most members can agree.
Regards,
Judyth
