Re: [atlarge-discuss] web page

IMO, the panel should determine, with a vote, how the web page will be supervised, and by whom. Right now Hans is proposing on a wide range of issues to dispense entirely with the working groups or any other committee, and just take unilaterial action, on everything from the web page to the bylaws. I don't see how this will impress people outside of this group. It would be fairly simple to the panel to choose a committee to oversee the web site. I am a member of the current web-wg, but have no interest in being chair of the wg if Hans is simply going to override everything on the committee as the acting Chair of the panel. Hans indicated he was considering making himself chair of the working group, but if this has been done, the panel has not been notified or consulted, and neither has the wg. I am quite surprised that Hans is making control over the web site yet another crisis for the group, and refusing to get panel approval for things he is doing.

In the meantime while the panel decides how to react to this flurry of non-voting actions, it would seem to be that the web page should provide access to the things that are clearly approved, such as the election results, bios of panel members etc, and links to discuss and panel archived mailing lists, and maybe recorded votes (there are not too many).

Why don't we keep it simple? I see no reason to present anything even
remotely controversial on the homepage. Of the four headline boxes, I would
recommend that 1 and 4 present information like:

(1) Headline: What is ICANNAtLarge.org?

(4) Headline: Join and Participate in ICANNatLarge.org.

Use (2) and (3) to highlight current developments. (2) might be a link to a
press release about Shanghai. (3) might be a link to the names and countries
of residence of the elected panel members.

P.S. I'm not going to post anything absent instruction from someone
official. Who might that person be? The entire panel or the head of the web
site working group?

Please include on the web page the followiing details.

There is no panel or working group approval to any of these draft
statements.

As a panel member, I would like to know where I can record my complete
opposition to posting of the draft bylaws, which I think are an embarassment
to the group and which will damage our creditbility.

What exactly is the basis for Hans replacing Joop in terms of deciding what
articles or quotes go on the web page?

Dear Panel,

I asked Bret to do a simple mock-up of a home page, and he put this
together:
 http://www.icannatlarge.com/indexnew.htm

Note that this (initial) small change recognizes that Joop's web site is
quite good but that the front page is messy. So Bret has cleaned up the
front page.

The front page has four "Headlines" links.
I suggest those headlines be:
 1. "At Large Forum in Shanghai" (links to our announcement)
 2. "Recent Writings About ICANNatlarge.org" with links to:
      Bruce Young's http://www.circleid.com/articles/2542.asp
(possibly an upcoming Cyber-Federalist on ICANNatlarge.org)
       other relevant articles/documents? (Jefsey? Richard?)
 3. "Draft Mission Statement"
 4. "Draft By-laws"
A note on the draft bylaws and mission statement. In order to make
clear that they are not complete, these could link to the Email postings
on the Panel list archives. I think that conveys their still-tentative
status.

At that point, I believe we present a credible face to the public. We
can be proud of what we have accomplished.

Again, our deadline is tonight. We have to reach people before they
depart for Shanghai!
