Yes, it's important to recognise that Denise's IcannatLarge is only a tiny
tiny marginal group of the whole At Large of the World. (All the more
regrettable that we've shouldered ourselves with the Icann name ourselves -
it so totally misses the point and endorses the ICANN-centric view of a
limited internet universe.)
The real @large is far far beyond Icann's little world : it is the hundreds
of millions of people who share the Internet, and who have a right to a
voice in its governance.
The sooner we establish and build up a broader @large independent and
outside of Icann, the better - because it's the reality. If our organisation
is primarily interested in an inside-ICANN agenda, then I have little
interest in that, because frankly I'm more interested in the vast majority
outside Icann.
For you, Jefsey, this is most nobly expressed in a Registry independent of
Icann, celebrating diversity and the openness of the namespace.
For myself, I'm interested in engaging in a battlefield "inside" the
frontiers of Icann's own universe, because in the short term, that is the
namespace and visible universe most internet users use and see... so my
interest in www.atlarge.org or a similar platform is a short-term concept
until the TLDs proliferate in terms of actual public use (in hundreds of
millions).
So I see three fronts and battlefields:
Vittorio's battlefront inside Icann, fighting for a REAL at large
representation in Denise Michel (read: the Icann Board) 's own agenda
The battlefront in the .com/.net/.org/.info universe most widely used by
internet users at present, to establish an "alliance" of users and At Large
groups who are willing to share a platform/umbrella (www.atlarge.org ) to
communicate to media, government and Icann that the @Large is far wider than
Icann itself and independent of both it and the USG
The third battlefront is Jefsey's brave new world of TLDs beyond the control
of Icann/USG : the atlarge Registry as expressed provisionally at
www.atlarge.ws - clearly this is the long term victory of the @Large, the
alternative universe (or one of a plethora of alternative universes) which
show ICANN island up for what it is.
I ask you: why can't we agree to just let each of these battlefronts
proceed? Why is the Panel blocking the use of www.atlarge.org for the second
battlefront of the war? I find that very very disappointing and negative. If
we believe in openness and expression, then why not let it just run, and see
if it works? If the panel just "sits" on this domain and blocks the second
battlefront - the creation of the great alliance - then what exactly is it
using the name for? To me, this is a conscious political decision to block
the creation of an alliance outside Icann. Some people want that alliance to
be "contained" within the Icann structures and the discredited initiative of
Denise Michel who is just a Board stooge as far as I'm concerned.
Our membership should we clear that there are people blocking the creation
of the alliance which Icann fears most : the one which refutes its own
supposed atlarge.
The real @Large has almost nothing to do with Icann's pretence, because
Icann is trying to contain all the diversity and freedom of our wide world
within its own limited commercial axis.
The real @Large is not IcannatLarge.
