Interesting remark.
Actually, Minitel was first the French e-yeallow pages. When you have found
the name by soundex, address in he stree, activity, trade mark etc.. you
name it, you just hit one key and it is riging.
Actually I do profer using Minitel service rather than memorizing telephone
numbers. I call the people using their name. Should be supported sometimes
by the Internet, once it has become a network instead of an access system:
tel://ibm.com is the regiular telephone address for the IBM PABX... unless
some IETF geeks and Verisign have their ways to use ENUM.

Many people worked on many of the early *pieces* to the puzzle. The pieces
that have
true value live on, and are *not dependant* on the transport regime.
Naming and directories
are still a key element. Unfortunately, the average user does not find
much utility in spending
their time with a system that allows them to do the equivalent of browsing
the yellow pages
all day. It is just not that interesting. Until people can **call** and
talk and chat and interact
the communication network has no appeal. 3D and 3V (voice, video and
vibration) are key
elements, but, again, are not an end in themselves. It is really very
simple, start with a human
and give them some device (PC, cell-phone, etc.) to use to connect to the
network. (Implants
are not yet in wide-spread use). Then, you have to have some
data-structure that allows
streams of data to be tagged so that one user can be distinguished from
another. You then
need a way for users to authenticate who they are and also ways to find
other users.
Not everyone can be named Jeff.
Places...Not everywhere can be named America...
Things...Not everything can be named C@t
Should we release the C@t ?
