[atlarge-discuss] Conference



Carnegie Mellon University [through the Institute for the Study of 
Information Technology and Society (InSITeS) of the H. J. Heinz III School of 
Public Policy and Management], Georgetown University Law Center, the Century 
Foundation, and Carnegie Corporation of New York will present a two-day 
conference, "SECURITY, TECHNOLOGY, AND PRIVACY:  TOWARD A 21ST CENTURY PUBLIC 
INFORMATION POLICY, April 24 - 25, 8:45 a.m. - 5:15 p.m. each day, at the 
Georgetown University Law Center, Moot Court Room, 600 New Jersey Avenue, NW, 
Washington, D.C.  Leading figures in technology, social science, law, 
medicine and public policy will discuss the balance between national 
security, individual privacy, and the public domain in a post-9/11 world.  
The conference will offer a unique multidisciplinary approach to 
understanding the challenges and opportunities for security, privacy, and 
public empowerment through freedom of information offered by the newest 
generation of information technologies.

Eight panels over two days will focus on four key areas:  Public Information 
and National Security; Privacy Impacts of Security Technologies; Public 
Information and Risk Comprehension; and Redefining the "Right to Know" in 
21st Century Public Information Policy.  Confirmed speakers include John 
Podesta of Georgetown and Peter Shane of Carnegie 
Mellon (who, along with Richard Leone, President of the Century Foundation, 
are co-chairs of the conference), plus Julie Cohen, George Duncan, Baruch 
Fischhoff, A. Michael Froomkin, JanLori Goldman, Linda Greer, Sally Katzen, 
W. Russell Neuman, Joel Reidenberg, Marc Rotenberg, Peg Seminario, Marvin 
Sirbu, Suzanne Spaulding, Latanya Sweeney, Peter Swire, Larry Thompson, 
Kathleen Tierney, Dave Touretzky, Elaine Vaughan, and Victor Weedn.

The conference is free, but registration is requested -- especially for 
anyone hoping to join in the lunch sessions, for which space is limited.
