It is not true that members are prevented from contacting each other by
email. That argument would only apply if a member had never posted. When
someone posts to this list, her email address is know, and any one may
respond on-list or privately.
If a member has never posted, why would anyone want to contact them, other
than for spamming reasons.
Furthermore, if a thousand (or 10,000 or 100,000) members are listed with
their name and email address, how long do you think it would take for that
list to be captured and sold, many times over?
