[atlarge-discuss] [Fwd: Tonight]

Oh NO!!! I just realized my HUGE mistake!

I actually met with Mike Roberts and NOT Joe Sims last night (as detailed in my message below...)! I am sincerely sorry for misleading anyone. I confused the two! Heck, there was booze involved and I claim momentary lapse of reason with respect to the inaccuracy of my report!!

Sorry to all.

--- Begin Message --- Being a 'national holiday' as I was told by the Quebecois (even though it's not a national holiday in the rest of Canada), tonight was the fete of St. Jean Baptiste in the city of Montreal (and the province of Quebec generally). It was a fortuitous circumstance, indeed a chance meeting, which found me invited to the afternic.com sponsored pub event at Hurley's Irish pub tonight. When I arrived, I recognized Mr. Joe Sims as one of the gentlemen seated at the bar. I introduced myself, took my place directly beside him (as the seat was available and he had no objection). Through Mr. Sims I was subsequently introduced to Rick Wesson and Jim (his surname escapes me as alcohol was involved and I have a low tolerance), of the IETF, along with Michael Donohue from the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) who also happened to be in the company of Mr. Sims. Our ensuing coversation lasted for over 90 minutes, and was quite informative (to say the least!). Indeed, at one point in our conversation, Mr. Sims made reference to the old Common Law concept of "prescriptive rights" (with an analogy thrown in by Jim about the closing of the Rockefeller centre to the general public one day out of the year, every year, to maintain the prescriptive right to the property), in reference to the Intellectual Property Constituency claims to entitlement priority in domain dispute considerations. Mr. Sims was not advocating for the prescriptive rights of the IPC, he was merely trying to characterize the present phenomenon in response to a query I had put to him. Mr. Sims did give me permission to quote him on this specific reference and his perception/explication of existing and ongoping circumstances at this juncture (which is not necessarily his position, I might add). Indeed, I found Mr. Sims to be quite a reasonable and circumspect individual. Our conversation touched on many issues of concern to atlarge members which I brought up during its course -everything from the possibility of unlisted whois information to Ron Sherwood's concerns about the pigeon-holing of his specific locale into an as yet opaque and undefined alac regional strucure- and I must say, I was given a fair hearing. In fact, I believe I was actually listened to... more than i can say for any of my conversations to dat here (excepting a hear to heart with Roberto Gaetano yesterday eve).

In any case, I look forward to continuing the dialogue with Rick and Jim of the IETF, as well as Mr. Donohue from the OECD, and Mr. Sims himself (as well as Roberto G.).
I am tired, and slightly (more than slightly) inhebriated, so I am going to bed now, I just wanted to submit this 'report from the feld' to the list before I sawed lumber for the rest of the night.:-)

Be Well,
