Move to resolve net disputes

By Deborah Hargreaves in Brussels - 21 Feb 2000 21:16GMT

The European Commission is looking at setting up a European Union-
wide system for resolving consumers' disputes about goods bought over
the internet as part of a wider initiative to encourage electronic

The system would involve setting up a series of clearing houses in EU
countries to direct complaints and consumer requests for redress to
the relevant national bodies.

David Byrne, consumer protection commissioner, said consumers would
still have recourse to national courts as a last resort, but that an
alternative mechanism would be "an enormous advantage for consumers
because it would be quick, cheap, simple and effective".
