The European parliament's legal affairs committee agreed on Monday to
compromise on far-reaching amendments proposed to the EU's
legislation on copyright.
MEPs in the influential committee passed changes to the copyright
rules that would tighten up restrictions on private copying of music
and films, but voted against extending the current system of levies
on CDs and videotapes to the Internet.
[...]
Mr Boselli's amendment, agreed on Monday, will restrict copies made
by individuals of films and music to strictly private use. This would
stop Napster, the US file-swapping service from operating its
swapping system for music in the EU without authorisation from the
recording artists.
[...]
The legal affairs committee also agreed another change to the
copyright rules that would allow broadcasters to use material from
their archives on the Internet without authorisation from the
copyright holders. This amendment has been bitterly opposed by rights
holders.
