Federal Agents Look to Adapt Private Technology

Technology has long been heralded in America as the solution to
social ills, and national security has been no exception. Since Sept.
11, all technology is being re-examined through the lens of security.
The software used by casinos to do employee background checks could
be used to map relationships among potential terrorists. The graphic
processing ability of video game consoles could be applied to handle
large satellite images of the United States. Data-mining software
used by financial companies could be used to spot health trends as
early warnings for bioterrorism attacks.
"We have to think outside the box," said Gilman Louie, the chief
executive of In-Q-Tel, the technology venture capital arm of the
Central Intelligence Agency. "We need to start with the premise of
the idea that someone else has the same problem."
