The Thinning of the Veil is a ballet-in-progress with music and staging by
Jaron Lanier and choreography by Rebecca Stenn. While the complete ballet
will make dramatic use of technology, including new technologies invented
expressly for it, the work is not technocentric. Some sections will be
composed simply of dance and live acoustic music, and it is these that will
be previewed on December 5th.

"The Veil is a metaphor between metaphors, referring on the one hand to the
boundary between everyday life and things metaphysical, and on the other to
the relationship of the physical world to technologically supported virtual
worlds. Without unseen worlds, the everyday world would collapse for lack
of meaning. This lends a fragility to the real and a sentimentality to
what is other."

About Jaron:

He coined the term "Virtual Reality" and initiated the VR industry, and
continues to innovate new media technologies. Music is his first love and
he has been an active composer and performer in the world of new classical
music since the late seventies. He is also a pianist and a specialist in
unusual musical instruments, especially the wind and string instruments of
Asia. Lanier has performed with artists as diverse as Philip Glass,
Ornette Coleman, Vernon Reid, Terry Riley, Barbara Higbie, and Stanley
Jordan. His record "Instruments of Change" was released on Point/Polygram.
In the works are a new album of chamber music for Sony Classics and an
orchestral commission for the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra.

About Rebecca:

Rebecca Stenn has toured extensively with Momix Dance Theatre and is a
founding member of the new Pilobolus Too duet company. She has her own
company, ThePerksDanceMusicTheatre. She has danced and choreographed for
the Emmy Award winning film "Pictures at an Exhibition", the newly released
3D IMAX film "Imagine", and Lina Wertmuller's "Carmen". Kevin Conley of
the New Yorker writes, "Rebecca Stenn has lyrical precision, athleticism
and speed." and Joseph Mazo of the Village Voice says, "Stenn is a fine
dancer - notably strong and precise. Humor and rhythmic energy give her
work a life of its own."

Is this SPAM to you?

I like getting messages like this, instead of relying on traditional media
to inform me about interesting events in New York City. On the other
hand, I feel violated when crass commercials are targeted at me. The
difference between the two is subjective. If you'd like to be removed
from this list, just ask.
