[icann-eu] Interesting slant on things...

BUDGET QUESTIONED
The budget for the nonprofit agency that oversees the registration of
Internet addresses, the Internet Corporation Assigned Names and Numbers
(ICANN), is having trouble collecting $1.35 million from regional operators
throughout the world, who manage country-specific domain names (for
example, .uk for the United Kingdom). Before the creation of ICANN by the
U.S. Commerce Department, the regional operators received naming services
for free, and some are now threatening to create an alternative Internet
rather than pay for the support of ICANN's full staff of 10 members.
