That's why I try to ignore Jeff on this list AFAP.

*shrug* I believe, you came close to a possible future. But if this happen,
ICANN will be ignored by the technical people. They'll simply switch to
another set of 'running code'.
I already know several net admins who are willing and able to switch there
DNS services. The current development of DNS in Germany is far from the
controverses discussed here but sufficient to kick DENIC in a reasonable
near future.
