With the refreshingly emotional debate about ICANN governance reaching something
of a crescendo, I personally think it's advisable for everyone to check their
"hole cards".
It is perfectly within the realm of possibility that
ICANN users could create such a storm of indignation that
the U.S. Department of Commerce (or the Congress) could feel impelled to step
in,
and even preempt ICANN's role in Internet governance. I think
this is even more likely under a Republican administration.
But, then where would we be? I know others disagree, but
for my part, I think this would be the worst of all scenarios.
