Re: [ICANN-EU] Re: [icann-candidates] ICANN hubbub

Barbara,

Thanks for the reply. You might have missed my point.

In some people's opinion, the net can continue to function
quite well with or without ICANN. Let me give you a
similar situation as a comparison. Some people, might think
that the net can not operate without one of Esther's other
net nanny organizations, TRUSTe.....or for that matter, some
might think that the EFF is essential to the operations of the
net. TRUSTe, EFF and ICANN are all basically the same,
but none of them is essential for continued operation of the net.

The TRUSTe Story

TRUSTe grew from a spark of an idea during a lecture on "Trust" at Esther
Dyson's PC Forum in March 1996. Among the attendees were Lori Fena,
Executive Director of the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), and Charles
Jennings, founder and CEO of Portland Software. Immediately after the
lecture, the two were introduced by a mutual friend who knew that each had
suggested the need for branded symbols of trust on the Internet similar to
UL Labs or Good Housekeeping "seals of approval." Then and there, the TRUSTe
initiative was born.

If you feel that ICANN is essential...
....explain what they do that is essential...
